This year, the Forum is trying a different format -- half-day workshops. The following is a schedule of classes being offered this Spring. We hope you will be able to join us on April 24, 2010, for one or more of the following workshops: Morning Sessions (9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., unless otherwise noted) BASIC
CIVIL LITIGATION
(
FORECLOSURE: AVAILABLE OPTIONS It seems as if just about everyone has a
friend, neighbor, or relative who has been affected by the downturn in the real
estate market. Foreclosure is the
ultimate result when borrowers can't make their monthly mortgage payments.
Borrowers in default typically don't know what's involved in a foreclosure. They
don't know their available options, and they don't know the consequences of each
option. Pre-foreclosure advice and strategies can make a substantial difference
in the outcome. The speaker will discuss the differences between short
sales, deeds in lieu of foreclosure, judicial foreclosures, and
non-judicial foreclosures, with strategies involved with each one. [3
hours MCLE] SPEAKER: Robert
B. Jacobs, Esq. MAKING EVERY MINUTE COUNT--TIME
MANAGEMENT FOR LEGAL SECRETARIES No
matter what your position in a law firm, you can improve your life by learning
to make time your ally instead of your enemy.
It isn’t that there is not enough time in each day; it’s that most of
us don’t use time effectively. The key to working smarter is to think and
plan ahead. This workshop will
provide ways to organize your thinking and prioritize your plans so that you can
get more out of your position and your life.
We will explore how to create effective lists, how to define and reach
your goals, how to turn wasted time into productive time, how to defeat
procrastination, and how to deal with the information explosion, and more. [3 hours MCLE] SPEAKER: MYSTERIES OF THE LAW OFFICE—REVEALED! Have you recently been employed by a law office, or are you a legal secretary, legal assistant, paralegal, or other legal support staff that feels a need for a "refresher"? Join our panel of seasoned speakers who will provide registrants with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their legal career. In the morning session, the speakers will discuss the unique employment environment of a law office; confidentiality, ethics, and professionalism; provide tips to deal with difficult office and client situations; review court structure; relationships with court personnel; written communication, including a review of legal terminology and proper legal citation; oral communication/e-mail etiquette; address the preparation and filing of legal documents with the court; and document control and file organization. Legal Solutions ETHICS Join us for a lively discussion of ethics
and the Rules of Professional Conduct. Ethics
and professional responsibility is a critical topic for attorneys, paralegals,
legal secretaries, and the entire legal team to understand and apply to the
practice of law. Attorneys must
comply with the Rules of Professional Conduct that regulate the legal
profession. Paralegals and legal
secretaries help attorneys maintain compliance and must have a clear
understanding of how the rules impact their jobs.
Real life examples of ethical challenges faced by attorneys, paralegals
and legal secretaries will be discussed. Strict
adherence to the Rules of Professional Conduct will help you maintain your
personal and professional well-being. Ways
to help you stay on top of these issues to better serve your clients will also
be discussed. [4 hours Legal Ethics MCLE] Janet

Prater-Slack, M.S. GOING BEYOND “FETCH, STAY, We
will start with a quick review of last year’s
seminar material, including the most popular tips for increasing efficiency
when creating and storing documents, retrieving information, and modifying
factory settings of your software to turn off annoying features. We’ll then
move on to great tricks to reduce the time you spend editing, proofreading, and
cleaning up old documents, help you organize and streamline your templates and
other master documents and forms, and make you aware of recent developments in
software to make your work less stressful. Just like last year, registrants will come away from this workshop with many new software tools! [This class does not qualify for CCLS or MCLE credit.] There
will be no written handout material distributed in this workshop.
